Randall Lane on whether this is the future of polling.
George Gallup described polling simply as the science of reflecting public opinion, and like any science, it’s only as good as the technology driving it. The first “modern” election polls, launched between the World Wars by Literary Digest, leveraged a new innovation, air mail, but failed famously in 1936, as the disproportionately wealthy audience forecast an Alf Landon landslide over FDR. Telephone surveys proved better, but also favored the rich at first (when phones were a luxury) and the old more recently (since younger voters tend to be cell-only, unreachable by pollsters). Exit polls, demographic modeling, prediction markets—all have been deployed to varied results.

How CTOs Can Help Businesses Run Better

What is the role of IT professionals in the long term? The collaboration enables M/A/R/C to add MOBI®, powered by WiseWindow, to their methods of research. MOBI, or Mass Opinion Business Intelligence, is the first web measurement technology that converts the millions of unsolicited opinions expressed online everyday by the general public into actionable data for businesses.
MOBI uses newly created and patented state-of-the-art technologies of cloud computing, deep website crawling, relevance recognition and statistical natural language analysis. Previous generations of technology are dependent on keyword searches which have proven to skew and limit what can be discovered. Conversely, MOBI’s Domain Discovery technology finds and analyzes all opinions about an industry and returns related opinions without the aid of any presupposed keywords. MOBI actually discovers new relationships on its own.
“M/A/R/C and WiseWindow are a logical fit,” says Merrill Dubrow, President and CEO of M/A/R/C Research. “With millions of comments on the web every month, we truly believe this partnership will allow our clients to understand what those comments mean and be able to react in a timely fashion to move their business forward quickly.”
“For the first time, companies can know who is talking about them and what they are saying as it happens,” says Marshall Toplansky, President of WiseWindow. “With the aid of MOBI, M/A/R/C clients will now be able to use social media to gain a competitive advantage.” M/A/R/C will use MOBI as a tool to help companies learn everything that is being said about them, their products and their industry. On a continuous, 24/7 basis, MOBI collects and analyzes hundreds of millions of online comments about an industry, brands and products. Companies are given aggregated data on those comments that is unsolicited, live and in real-time.

About M/A/R/C® Research
M/A/R/C® Research (www.MARCresearch.com) is a custom marketing research firm dedicated to helping our clients create, evaluate, and strengthen their brands. WebWatch™ provides the film industry’s first in-depth analysis of millions of daily opinions expressed online about movies and translates those opinions, via MOBI, into both useful public data posted on the BoxOffice.com website and a huge range of more in-depth reports provided to subscribing film industry members. These reports include information never before available to industry executives – like total share-of-opinion as compared to other films, a metric that has been shown to correlate to share-of-market and box office earnings.

Reports such as Most Discussed Films, Most Viewed Trailers and Facebook and Twitter Indices can help film industry professionals, including producers, studios, filmmakers, distributors and theater owners, project attendance and earnings, determine the effectiveness of marketing and trailers, and gain insight into audience views on a broad range of topics including lead actors, plot and special effects. In some cases, the reports can even provide actionable data on the impact a movie has on an advertiser or product sponsor; for example, a heartwarming movie about a dog and its family might have an impact on the brand of dog food that is used in the movie.

The current ranking of the Most Discussed Films this week shows that the Iron Man 2 and A Nightmare on Elm Street scored the highest positive buzz rates of movies now playing. Those scores correlate to box office returns as those movies ranked numbers 1 and 2 in current box office earnings.

Most Discussed Films
Film Positive Buzz Negative Buzz
1 Iron Man 2 50.5% 6.9%
2 The Twilight Saga: Eclipse 52.4% 14.5%
3 A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) 51.2% 11.7%
4 Kick-Ass 60.8% 6.2%
5 The Last Airbender 33.9% 18.1%

According to Marshall Toplansky, president of Wise Window, “Working with BoxOffice.com on this game-changing tool has been exciting in many ways. While MOBI works for any company in any field, film is a particular test because it’s such a fast-moving industry. Each film has a very short window in which to succeed. The information MOBI can provide to distributors and other film executives real time via WebWatch™ can help companies make changes to products and promotion on the fly in order to affect the outcome. And because many of the reports are predictive, WebWatch™ can also help with planning for future films.”

Mass Opinion Business Intelligence was developed by some of the leading technologists in pattern recognition, web crawling and cloud computing. It is based on four patents which take web measurement far beyond the traditional use of keywords that superimpose the measurer’s viewpoint on the outcome, to literally “discover” what people think and feel and what they are discussing. A recent comparison of carefully selected keyword search to the MOBI discovery process showed that the keywords only uncovered 7 percent of the total information found by MOBI. Moreover, MOBI is the first technology to actually produce actionable, predictive data and produce reports that can be put to use in real time.

According to Peter Cane, publisher of BOXOFFICE Media, which owns and operates BoxOffice.com, “Just as it always has, opinion counts the most in the success of films. And today, opinions are measured in the millions. People in our industry know about “Twitter bombs,” movies that have been predicted to succeed by traditional market research, only to be negatively affected the first weekend by thousands of negative opinions expressed to millions of people. WEBWATCH can help film professionals get their arms around this huge, vocal public and know well in advance what they’re thinking. It can help executives track everything from what people are saying about the trailers to what they want in a film. We can break down analyses by individual dimensions like just the actors or just the director. It really is a paradigm shift in film analysis.”

Basic analyses of Most Discussed Films, Most Viewed Trailers, Facebook Index and Twitter Index are continuously available on BoxOffice.com. Interested industry professionals can view the range of available subscription reports, starting at only $10 per month, at https://www.boxoffice.com/statistics/signup or by calling (310) 876-9090.

About BoxOffice.com

BoxOffice.com is the premiere website for the business of movies, with the web’s most comprehensive database of box office numbers, news and analysis of the US and international film industries. BoxOffice.com is also the exclusive home of WebWatch™, which tracks millions of web-based movie opinions in real time. BoxOffice.com is owned and operated by BOXOFFICE Media, which publishes BOXOFFICE Magazine, the legendary publication serving the theatrical film community for 90 years and counting.

About WiseWindow
WiseWindow provides a new generation of web measurement technology that goes far beyond traditional keyword searches to mine and analyze the millions of opinions expressed in social media each day, identify only those that relate to a given company or product, and refine those opinions into actionable reports. The measurement, called Mass Opinion Business Intelligence (MOBI), was developed by some of the industry’s leading experts in web measurement, cloud computing and market research and can discover things like total share of opinion, how it changes over time and how it correlates with share of market – measurements that have never been available through market research. Using 10 standard syndicated reports that track what customers think, what they want, who they follow and what they’ll buy, WiseWindow provides relevant, actionable decision support to senior executives, marketers and market researchers. More information can be found at www.wisewindow.com.

About TechAmerica
TechAmerica is the leading voice for the U.S. technology industry, which is the driving force behind productivity growth and jobs creation in the United States and the foundation of the global innovation economy. The open-source project will develop a web-based bio-computational tool that allows bio-scientists and biocomputation engineers to “crunch data in the cloud” for large-scale tasks such as processing gene sequence data sets on a large cluster of computers. The new tool allows scientists to save considerable time that’s now spent waiting for computations on their desktops by moving these operations to the cloud, thereby freeing up their computers for other work.

“Working as a lead advisor to Caltech on cloud computing is both a privilege and passion for me,” said Dulepet. “It allows me to exercise skills in Internet data gathering and analysis as well as computational framework development.”
In 2004 and 2008, Dulepet served as a visiting scholar at the Stanford School of Management and Engineering, spearheading the development of Presidential prediction analysis. “I have used many of the same cloud computing and analysis methods in the development of Mass Opinion Business Intelligence,” adds Dulepet.
Mass Opinion Business Intelligence is a cloud computing application that uses patent-pending technologies developed by Dulepet in deep website crawling, auto-classification of opinions, relevance recognition and statistical natural language applications to translate millions of mass opinions expressed each day online into actionable data for business. Unlike traditional web measurement based on the presuppositions of key word searches, Mass Opinion Business Intelligence discovers all conversations related to a given topic and extracts only the data that’s relevant and valid to a given product, company and market. It’s a new generation of web measurement.
The Caltech project expects to deliver a useful open-source tool for bio-scientists by mid-2010. “I look forward to working with Caltech on other cloud computing programs,” Dulepet concluded.

About WiseWindow

WiseWindow provides a new generation of web measurement technology that goes far beyond traditional keyword searches to mine and analyze millions of opinions expressed in social media each day, identify only those that relate to a given company or product, and refine those opinions into actionable reports. The new measurement, called Mass Opinion Business Intelligence, extends beyond the traditional keywords and click-throughs to provide true strategic business tools that are predictive of market movement. Using 10 standard syndicated reports that track what customers think, what they want, who they follow and what they’ll buy now and in the future, WiseWindow provides decision support to senior executives, marketers and market researchers.

According to Sid Mohasseb, chief executive officer, WiseWindow, “For years, people have talked about the potential of sentiment analysis to measure the millions of opinions expressed on the web, but problems of context, word usage, intent, and the sheer volume of data make it largely unusable for strategic business decisions. That’s where WiseWindow comes in – we’ve developed a methodology to identify only the relevant data that relates and is pertinent to a given market, company and product to organize the data, make sense of it and make it actionable for companies. Mass Opinion Business Intelligence can discover things like total share of opinion, how it changes over time and how it correlates with share of market. Share of opinion is often the key measurement for companies seeking business intelligence from the conversations expressed online, not the overall volume of opinion. This kind of knowledge has never been possible before.”
Mass Opinion Business Intelligence was developed by some of the industry’s leading experts in web measurement, cloud computing and market research. The technology, protected by three patents*, employs a “domain-centric” approach to mass opinion. It is a platform that crawls the Internet for qualitative subjective opinions and objective facts and makes them available as quantifiable structured data. The resulting business intelligence not only provides a continuous source of vital information to businesses, it also can be used as a new source of revenue by WiseWindow web partners.
WiseWindow Mass Opinion Business Intelligence has already been proven in the entertainment, automotive, and health and beauty aids industries, as well as in the political realm. type='text'>It’s Not Social, It’s Business.

More than ever before in history, people have the opportunity to affect and alter the opinions and decisions of others. Everyday, millions of people express their preferences, dissatisfactions, experiences and tendencies online, and before anybody buys anything or makes a decision of any kind they generally consult those opinions. People who hardly use a computer will have a friend “google” a topic they want to make a decision on. They think they’re consulting experts, when in fact they are simply touching base with the opinions of masses of people just like them. Most of us have a particular blogger or columnist we check with for their opinion, and we may even send them a direct message asking for their views. I recently asked a blogger who said she bought a particular product for her opinion of it and that opinion greatly influenced my final purchase. And I might add, when I have a question about my purchase, I enter a chat room and ask other users.
The millions of opinions expressed online are not “social” they’re business. They affect, influence, in fact even drive your brand (yes, even if your company is business-to-business). It doesn’t matter if we agree, believe or participate in this process, mass opinion in many ways is the market. Understanding mass opinion can help us to identify our customers, know what they want and don’t want, see when their opinions are changing positively or negatively, and predict how our market position will follow their opinions. We can do all these things—IF we have the tools.
For a number of years, experts have regarded this growing mass of opinion as a potential holy grail of wisdom for companies and brands, but the tools simply haven’t been there to take advantage of this knowledge. We counted clicks and amassed keywords, but the resulting data, while interesting, didn’t tell anyone anything useful. Now, that has changed. New technologies are making it possible to actually mine the wisdom of mass opinion in ways never feasible before. To turn that mass opinion into true business intelligence. That is the purpose of this blog. We want to talk about putting mass opinion in business.

WiseWindow's Launch Press Release

INTRODUCING MASS OPINION BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE FROM WISEWINDOW, THE NEW GENERATION OF WEB MEASUREMENT OF REAL-TIME CONSUMER OPINIONS

Provides Relevant, Actionable Information to Executives, Marketers and Researchers

IRVINE, Calif., January 5, 2010 – WiseWindow today introduced a new generation of web measurement technology that goes far beyond keyword searches to mine and analyze the millions of opinions expressed in social media each day, identify only those that relate to and are pertinent to a given company and product, and then refine those opinions into actionable reports.
